a month agoThe Nubian Villages in Aswan, Egypt, are vibrant communities on the West Bank of the Nile River. Famous for their brightly painted homes, rich heritage, and warm hospitality, they offer an authentic cultural experience. Accessible only by boat, the most renowned is Gharb Soheil, which is typically a 45-minute sail from Aswan. Visiting these villages lets you experience a culture distinct from the rest of Egypt, characterized by African and ancient Egyptian roots. Tour traditional homes, some of which feature small indoor exhibits with live crocodiles, and interact with the welcoming locals. Shop for vibrant handmade crafts, spices, woven baskets, and jewelry. Take a short, guided camel ride through the golden desert sands along the riverbank. Get traditional, locally-styled henna tattoos. You can easily hire a private motorboat or a traditional felucca (sailboat) from the docks in central Aswan for a scenic, relaxing journey up the Nile. Keep in mind that these are traditional, conservative communities. It is best to dress respectfully (covering shoulders and knees) to show cultural appreciation.

a month agoA real tourist trap; the homestay is of little interest. Not a village, but rather a touristy shopping street. Very disappointed.
